Nathan Lowy Obituary

August 6, 1929 – December 27, 2023

Nathan “Gene” Lowy, 94, of Akron, Ohio, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2023, with his daughter at his bedside.
He was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1929, son of the late Harry and Charlotte (Grossman) Lowy. Gene attended West Tech High School, specializing in Art, before enlisting in the United States Army in 1947, where he served as a corporal during the Korean War. During his service, Gene married the love of his life, the late Kathryn “Kathy” (Sperber) Lowy, his beloved wife of 70 years, and moved to Akron, Ohio, where they built their family. He worked as a package designer and window trimmer for Sears and a silkscreen artist for Gray Drug, where he retired after 38 years.
Anyone that knew Gene knew his love for life and laughter; and that he undoubtedly could always put a smile on your face. It brought him great joy to share stories of his travels and adventures as well as jokes with his friends and family. He always put his loved ones and their happiness first, illustrating his selfless way of living. In addition to spending time with his family, he enjoyed reading and was an avid film enthusiast. He and Kathy loved to travel the world and shared many great vacations with each other, as well as with friends and family.
Left to honor Gene’s memory are his daughter, Hope Smith of Copley; grandson Jeremy (Tiffany) Smith of Canfield and Emily Appel of Brooklyn, New York; and great-grandchildren Jacob and Mackenzie Smith of Canfield.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Gene was proceeded in death by his daughter, Shari Appel, his sister, Frances Cohen, and his brother, Alan Lowy.
Gene’s family would like to give a special thanks to Heritage Crossing and Southerncare Hospice for their attentive care and compassion during this time.
The Lowy family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Gordon Memorial Home and will hold a private funeral service at Rose Hill Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers, tributes may take the form of monetary contributions in Gene’s honor to Akron-Summit County Public Library or to the American Cancer Society.
