Dr. Herbert Kern
Dr. Herbert Kern (everyone here called him Herbie) passed away peacefully on August 23, 2023 surrounded by his family. He lived a colorful and amazing life that began January 2nd, 1928 in Hamburg, Germany. In 1937, when Herbie was nine, his family left Nazi Germany and moved to Tel Aviv where he grew up. He went to Medical School in Lausanne, Switzerland, as Israel had no medical school at the time. While attending Medical School he became fluent in French and English in addition to his German and Hebrew. He did residencies in internal medicine in New York City and psychiatry at Metro Health in Cleveland. He loved practicing psychiatry.
He never met a person he didn’t like and treated everyone he met with the utmost respect and compassion. He made friends easily and had a great zest for life that was infectious to those around him. He was a wise man always willing to help anyone solve a problem. He had a keen intellect and a very quick wit. His smile and laugh and ability to draw people in with his storytelling touched so many lives.
He loved spending time with his extended family which was dispersed after the war and often traveled around the world to spend time with them. His immediate family was always a priority for Herbie, especially his beloved wife, Hanita, to whom he was happily married for 65 years. They raised David, Michelle, and Tamar in a home that was always welcoming. They took great joy as their immediate family expanded to include Mary Hickcox, Eliot Mostow, and then their wonderful grandchildren, Jackie Mostow, Daniella (Zach) Kodjo, Noah Mostow, Olivia Kern and Kara Kern.
